Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of) Theatre Royal, Plymouth **** Expected etiquette of high society and the unstinting demands of another era are turned on their heads in this frenetic frolic through Jane Austen's esteemed tale. This modern take stays true to the original plot of the multi-layered romance examining relationships and the roles men can often play in the lives of women at the time. Here all roles are played by women as five 'servants' take on all the characters to bring the story to life in a unique and fun retelling.

It is still one of Austen's best loved novels and 250 years after her birth has a place in the hearts of many since Colin Firth emerged from a lake with his damp shirt in the 1995 adaptation and later a Hollywood remake with all-star cast. This spirited stage production, written and directed by Isobel McArthur, has played to acclaim in London's West End and is now touring the country and keeping the celebration of Austen's work alive and kicking ass. This five-hander relies on some serious character acting with all players skilfully transforming themselves in moments from quarrelling sisters to upper-crust gentry.

And top hats off to them! Much of it requires testing physicality and expert timing which is mastered to precision by our all-female cast. All the multi-roles are pulled off to much success including Emma Rose Creaner as Charlotte Lucas, both Charles and Caroline Bingley; Eleanor Kane as Mary, Lydia, William Collins and Mrs Gardiner and Christi.
