BISMARCK — So close yet so far were the Dickinson Midgets to earning their first WDA victory of the season. The Midgets fell 2-1 in overtime to the Bismarck Century Patriots on Tuesday, a team that they fell to at home by the same score. With the contest going beyond 57 minutes, each team earned a point in the standings.
After chances on both ends of the rink in the extra session, the Patriots found themselves on a 2-on-1 break and Century senior forward Andrew Brubakken flung a wrist shot past Midgets senior goaltender Bryce Kadrmas at the 4:03 mark of overtime. ADVERTISEMENT Both teams were held scoreless until the final frame. After a low-event first period, with the shot counter deadlocked at six a side, the Patriots turned up the heat and outshot the Midgets 18-10 in the middle frame.
The chances snowballed into the third and both squads broke the opposing netminders. The Patriots drew first blood just 2:46 into the period, but the Midgets responded thanks to sophomore forward Rylan Miller, with senior forward Shayden Jackson-Zietz earning the only assist. Miller’s tally marked his 6th goal of the season, which leads the team.
DHS was 0-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill. Kadrmas played a huge role in getting his team a point, stopping all 18 shots in the second and making 40 saves on 42 shots. The Midgets (3-10-0, 0-10-3) will return home on Thursday, Jan.
