LONE TREE — Qualifiers for state boys and girls high school golf will be determined in a new fashion starting in fall of 2025. CHSAA’s Legislative Council voted 44-22 in favor of eliminating the regional golf tournament this year. Three did not vote on the measure and one abstained.

In the CHSAA Legislative Council packet, the rationale for eliminating the regional tournament was: “A one-day regional tournament isn’t the best practice to have the top 84 golfers in the state. Travel for (a) one-day tournament can get expensive for outlying schools. The addition of the 2A classification has stretched our state golf courses and officials way too thin.

Overloading these two entities could create a problem finding courses willing to host the state championships.” Instead of the regional tournament, the top 84 state qualifiers will be determined in a minimum of five qualifying rounds, which will be regulated through iWanamaker, a site and app used to compile golf scores. The top 84 golfers will be determined on iWanamaker the Monday before the state tournament.

Prior to the vote, dissenters of the proposed change voiced their displeasure with the measure. “Everything we do as CHSAA is a team concept,” said Mike Hughes, Lakewood High School athletic director. “Now all of the sudden, we’re going to something that’s just about getting individual qualifiers.

I know we have individual qualifiers for wrestling (and) I know we have individual qualifiers in certain spor.
