A couple in Padiham got an early morning fright when they woke up to a snake in their toilet. The snake, which was confirmed to be a corn snake, filled the bowl and was slithering around the seat, and the couple called the RSPCA to rescue the reptile. When the RSPCA came to visit, the snake escaped back down through the bowl and the homeowner has said it could still be in the pipes in the area.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “It must have been quite a shock for the householder to see a snake popping their head up in the toilet!” “The resident who contacted the RSPCA for help told our Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) that the toilet hadn’t been flushing very well for a few weeks, so this slithery visitor may have been lurking in the pipes for some time. “The snake was a harmless corn snake, though unfortunately, it disappeared back around the u-bend before she was able to catch it. She has promised to make a return visit if it reappears.

" Mystery still surrounds the origins of the animal, and many on social media have theorised it to be a lost pet, with suggestions it could also be a ball python. One person commented on the post on Facebook saying: “Wow, I would be wrapping my toilet in cling film in case it decided to come back out again when I was either out or sleeping!” Another joked: “By the looks of that I'd say you need more fibre in your diet.” Snakes are attracted to various types of prey, including rats, and can sometimes follow them into sewers.
