Serious questions are being raised about the alleged manipulation happening behind the scenes on MAFS and the impact that is having on the mental health of the participants. Now there are calls for the government to step in and take action. Welcome to INSIDE MEDIA, you can watch the video version of this article in the player above.

DOES MAFS NEED GOVERNMENT OVERSIGHT Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today There’s been a big shift in the commentary surrounding Channel 9’s Married At First Sight this year. Usually, attention is focused on the bad behaviour of participants, but this season the focus has been on the tactics used by producers to manipulate those taking part in the hit series Now, former groom Ben Walters is calling for independent oversight, something akin to an intimacy coordinator, someone who has the power to stop producers crossing the line and advise participants of their rights. “I had an idea where there could be an independent person who witnesses the immense shit that’s actually happening and goes, ‘no, no, no production’s taken this too far, this person’s mental health needs a break stop filming’,” Walters explained to me on Saturday’s edition of McKnight Tonight .

It’s a bold idea and one that makes sense. And you might recall I took Ben to task last week in this very column for misrepresenting my comments about those who take part in MAFS. He contacted me and apologised and we had a really good chat about the show.
