A mother has been left stunned by her daughter’s response after she asked her to chip in for rent. The effects of the cost of living crisis are ongoing and day-to-day expenses continue to increase for the vast majority of people. One 49-year-old mother has two adult children who are still living at home – 'Emma', 25, and 'Ian', 23.

She divorced their father 12 years ago so is accustomed to it being just the three of them. Her ex-husband “willingly” paid child support but stopped once they were both 18 years old. Now both Emma and Ian work full-time, “don’t have any debt from school” and still live at home.



On Reddit , the mum explained: “I have asked them repeatedly to contribute a set amount each month towards household expenses since I can’t continue supporting them forever. Ian doesn’t have a problem with this, but Emma thinks it’s my responsibility as her mother to support her financially until she’s ready to move out.” The mum isn’t “trying to profit from them” but does want to be able to save for her retirement.

She has asked for $100 (£80) each per week “to cover their share of groceries, utilities, and household supplies”. She continued: “I buy all the groceries, laundry detergent, toilet paper, etc for the house. They are responsible for their cars and related expenses, cell phones, and personal toiletries.
