An independent whisky distillery in the Highlands has won big at the World Whisky Awards Icons of Whisky Global. Nc’nean from the Highlands was named ‘Sustainable Distillery of the Year’ at the awards having been championed as Scotland’s at the regional heats in December last year. Now the distillery has beaten well-known brands from around the world to take top spot globally.

The award requires companies to show their sustainability achievements over the previous 12 months. Nc’nean showed its reverification of its net zero carbon status for scopes one and two, the launch of its full miniature range into 100% recycled glass to align with its full-size bottles, the growth of its bottle refill scheme at the distillery, and the introduction of its bottle return scheme for UK customers. It all played an important role in helping Nc’nean winning the award.

The company also only uses organic Scottish barley in its distillations to protect biodiversity on Scottish farms and runs the distillery on 100^ renewable energy, while also reusing or recycling 99.97% of its waste.
