This is the moment the two-storey family home of Kinahan cartel target James ‘Mago’ Gately, with an extension ‘the size of a two-storey apartment’, was seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau. Up to a dozen members of the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), backed up by members of An Garda Síochána, moved in at 11am on Tuesday morning and took the luxurious property on Glin Drive in Coolock . It’s the latest seizure against Gately and his partner Charlene Lam as the CAB already seized a VW Golf and a ladies' Rolex belonging to the couple after the High Court found the property, as well as the car and watch, were “overwhelmingly” derived from proceeds of crime.
The couple denied the allegations and argued their assets were acquired with legitimate funds. Contesting the CAB case against him and his partner, Gately claimed in an affidavit filed to the High Court that he purchased the Coolock property in 2013 for €125,000 by putting a €12,500 deposit on the home and took out a 40-year mortgage. He claimed he made the mortgage repayments until 2015 and his partner took over the monthly mortgage payments since then as he has not been working.
He also claimed the 59-square-metre extension, which officers from the CAB described in affidavits as being the ‘size of a two-storey apartment,’ worth €440,000, was built practically for free by a pal and his late dad with discounted materials.
